Newly unearthed head of buddha could be 'twin' of bule house statue

When archaeologists in korea stumbled upon the head 

of a buddha statue in the historic city of gyeongju, north 

geyeonsang, recently, they couldn't help but marvel at the 

strange resemblance of the face to the buddha statue sitting 

in the bule house today.

 

"The face of the statue newly discovered has a striking 

resemblance to the face of the buddha sitting in the 

premises of the blue house." Cheo seong-yoon, researcher 

at foundation of silla cultural heritage research institute, 

told the korea joongang daily on wednesday. "More research 

should follow. But at this point there are talks that the two 

buddha statues may be twins."

 

sitting in a mountainous area of naenam-myeon of 

gyeongu is a stone statue of buddha that is missing its 

head. It's unclear for how long the statue has been sitting 

there, but researchers pinpoint its origin to the unified silla 

period( 668-935).

 

the research institute, in cooperation with the cultural 

heritage administration of the korean government , began 

examining the area as part of its regular preservation work 

when they uncovered the missing head of the buddha,

buried underground very close to the statue.

 

"the body of the statue also very closely resembles the body 

of the statue in the bule house, especially the shape of the 

square pedestal upon which the buddha sits." The 

administration said in a statement on wednesday.

 

the statue in the bule house was moved there from 

gyeongju during the japanese occupation of korea (1910-

1945). It was designated a treasure in 2018 for being a well-

preserved examples of a buddhist statue dating back to the 

unified silla period. It is being prepared to be moved back to 

gyeongju.

 

the newly discovered head of the buddha will be displayed 

at the reserach institute from june 10.

"새로 발견된 그 부처상의 얼굴은 청와대 대지에 앉아있는 

부처상의 얼굴에 놀랄만하게 닮아 있다."신라문화유산 조사

협회에 연구원인, 최성윤 씨는 수요일에 코리아 중앙데일리에 

말했다. "더 많은 조사가 따라야 한다. 그러나 지금 시점에서는 

그 두 부처상들이 쌍둥이 상일 것이라는 말이 있다."

 

경주의 내남면의 산악지역에 앉아있는 것은 그것의 두상이

없는 부처 석상이다. 얼마나 오랫동안 그 석상이 거기에 

있었는지는 확실하지 않지만, 연구원들은 통일신라시대로 

그 기원을 정확히 겨누었다.

 

그 조사 협회는, 한국 정부의 문화유산 행정부와 함께 그 석상의

매우 가까운 곳에 땅속에 묻혀있던 부처상의 잃어버린 두상을

발견했을 때 그 지역을 정기적인 보존 작업의 부분으로서 검토를

시행하기 시작했다.

 

"그 석상의 몸체 또한 특히 그 부처상이 앉아있는 정사각형의 받침대가 

청와대에 있는 석상에  매우 근접하게 닮아있다."

 

청와대의 석상은 일본의 한국 식민지 동안에 경주로부터 옮겨졌다.

2018년에 통일신라 시대로 거슬러 가는 잘 보존된 부처상의 한 예로

보물로 지정되었다. 경주로 다시 옮겨지기 위해 준비 중이다.

 

새롭게 발견된 부처상의 두상은 6월 10일부터 연구 기관에서 

전시된다.
