'Maytoday' brings up painful memory of gwangju democratization

movement for remembrance

Memories of the gwangju democratic uprising wil

be brought back next month at the exhibition 

"maytoday" , organized by gwangju biennale foundation.

 

the gwangju democratization movement took place

in may 1980 when civilians protested against military 

strongman chun doo-whan, who came to power in a

military coup in december 1979. Martial law troops

mobilized in gwangju to suppress the demonstrations 

killed more than 200 citizens and wounded more than

3,000- the highest number of casualties since the

korea war.

 

the truth about the massacre remains hidden as

former president chun refuses to admit his involvement.

the trauma of the painful incident remains deeply 

embedded in the hearts of gwangju's citizens.

 

the exhibition will take place june 3 through july 5 

at art sonje center and namu artist space on june3-30

in jongno-gu, central seoul.

while the main exhibition will be held at art sonje center,

the woodblock prints will be displayed in the latter place.

 

upon entering the art sonje center, a photo of a soldier

at a military base that was mobilized to suppress the 

democratization movement faces a civilian who stands

at the democracy plaza, the square where the mass

demonstrations against troops were held.

 

the exhibition is part of the global project hosting 

exhibitions in four countries- south korea, taiwan,

germanmy and argentina to promote the spirit of 

gwangju democratic movement. The exhibitions will

take place from may to september.

gwangju democratic movement which was held to protest

against Chun doo-whan government in 1980 killed more than

200 civilians and wounded more than 3,000 people.

기사의 제목은 광주 민주화 운동을 기념하는 "may to day"

전시회는 아픈 기억들을  불러일으킨다.

 

광주비엔날레 재단에 의해 다음 달에 개최될 "may to day" 전시회는

광주 민주운동의 기억들을 불러일으킬 것이다.

 

광주 민주화 운동은 시민들이 1979년 12월에 군 쿠데타로

정권을 잡은 군 독재자 전두환에 반대하여 

시위를 했던 1980년 5월에 일어났다. 그 시위를 진압하기 

위해서 광주에 동원된 계염령 군들은 200명 이상의 시민의 

목숨을 빼앗고, 3,000명 이상에게 부상을 입혔다

:이것은 한국전쟁 이후로 가장 높은 사상자 숫자이다.

 

전두환 전 대통령이 그의 관여를 인정하지 않고 있어

그 대량 학살에 대한 진실은 여전히 은폐된 채로 남아있다.

고통스러운 그 사건의 정신적 충격이 광주 시민들의 마음에

깊이 박혀 있는 채로 남아있다.

 

전시회는 6월 3일부터 7월 5일까지 서울 종로구에 있는

손재 아트와 나무 아트 스페이스에서 6월 3일에서

30일까지 열릴 것이다. 주요 전시회는 아트 손재에서 

열릴 예정이며 목판인쇄는 나무 아트 스페이스에서 

전시될 예정이다.

 

아트 손재에 들어서자마자, 민주화 운동을 저지하기

위해 동원된 한 군부대 군인이 대규모 시위가 열렸던 

민주광장에서 시민과 마주 보고 있는 사진이 있다.

 

이 전시회는 광주 민주화 운동의 정신을 알리기 위해

한국, 타이완, 독일 그리고 아르헨티나 4개국에서 

개최되는 세계적인 프로젝트 중 하나다.

1980년 5월 18일 광주 민주화 운동은 전두환 정권에 반대하는

시민들의 시위를 저지하는 과정에서 200명 이상의 일반인

사망자와 3,000명 이상의 부상자를 희생시키며 한국전쟁 이후로 가장

높은 사상자 숫자를 나타냈던 사건이다.

*중요한 것은 동사 확인, 그리고 어떤 단어들과 짝꿍으로 쓰이는지를 

잘 파악해 두는 것이다.
